Summary: Brendon visits New Jersey.
It's not that Frank didn't mean the offer – he totally did – he just forgot he had made it to begin with. That's why he’s surprised when he’s on his way to meet Jamia for a late lunch and his phone starts playing Panic at the Disco. (No matter what anyone said, it made his life easier that he used band ringtones for certain people.) “Hello?”
“Frank? Hey, it's Brendon Urie. Um, did you really mean it when you offered to show me around if I came to Jersey? I kinda just needed to get away from Vegas, y'know?”
Frank recovers quickly. “Yeah, sure, man. When were you thinking of coming up?”
Brendon sounds a little nervous when he answers, “Um, well, I got here last night?”
Frank laughs. “You're not, like, sitting in the airport, are you?”
“Nah, I got a room at the Marriott.”
“Cool, that's right on my way. I'll be there in ten.” Frank calls Jamia as soon as he hangs up with Brendon. He knows she won't mind, he just doesn’t want to surprise her. “Hey, hun, one of the kids from Panic at the Disco is in town and is gonna join us for lunch.”
Jamia says, “Good, I've been wanting someone new to talk to. Do I need to ask for extra crayons when I get our table?”
The first thing Frank notices when Brendon climbs in the car is that he looks tired, way more than he should unless he's still recovering from touring, and Frank doesn’t really keep track of Panic, but he has a vague recollection of Mikey saying that Pete said the boys were taking some time off or something. He can't help asking, “Hasn't your tour been over for a while?”
Brendon nods. “A few weeks now, yeah. We're taking some time off before we hit the studio. I just haven't been sleeping well.” And he changes the subject, telling Frank about some drama he had witnessed at the airport.
When they get to the restaurant, Brendon greets Jamia with a hug and sets about charming her with elaborate stories complete with stick-figure doodles drawn on the placemat.
After Brendon and Jamia share a dessert (Brendon claimed he didn't want anything, but he kept eyeing the chocolate molten lava cake on the placard on the center of the table, so Jamia ordered it for herself and insisted Brendon help her eat it because she was watching her figure. Frank tried not to laugh because he knew his wife and knew what she was trying to do. Plus, he'll be watching her figure for the rest of his life, no matter what, and he knows she's not self-conscious about her weight.) Jamia has errands to run, so Frank takes Brendon to his favorite comic shop (Brendon isn’t as into comics as Gee, but Frank knows what cheers his best friend up so he's trying to apply the same concept here), to the music store that Frank's been coming to for as long as he can remember, and to the pet store (dog food was totally on Frank's list of errands, but the pet store has the added benefit of puppies in the front of the store).
Okay, so Frank's a total sap, he knows this and accepts it, but Brendon looks sad and that's just wrong. He does seem to relax a little as the day goes on, his smile more genuine, his posture less tense, and Frank knows he probably didn’t come to New Jersey with the intention of just hanging out, but that seems to be what he needs. Jamia calls to see if she's making dinner for two or three, and tempts Brendon with the invitation to watch Mamma Mia with her since Frank won't sing along.
Brendon's phone buzzes several times over the course of the evening. Brendon doesn’t even bother to look at the display, just ignores it completely. Frank asks once if he's gonna answer, and Brendon shrugs. “It's Spencer.”
Frank’s a little concerned that Brendon is ignoring his bandmates, even if it’s not really his business. “Do your guys know where you are?”
Brendon says, “They know I'm out of town,' and changes the subject again.
Frank wants to ask why Brendon's still carrying his phone around, hasn't turned it off, if he's not gonna answer anyway, but he doesn’t. He figures there’s a reason there, though.
Brendon insists on going back to his hotel after the movie, despite the fact Frank and Jamia have a perfectly good guest bedroom. Frank drops Brendon off with tentative plans for the next afternoon – he tells Brendon to be sure and sleep in; he looks like a solid twelve hours would do him some good – and waits until he's a couple blocks away before he pulls out his phone, scrolling through his contact list until he gets to Spencer Smith.
“Spencer? Hi, it's Frank Iero. I don't know what the story is, but Brendon's here in New Jersey. I thought you might want to know.”
Spencer sighs. “Is he okay?”
Frank doesn’t know Brendon well enough to say whether or not he's okay, so he says, “He seems to be. A little tired, maybe. He hung out with me and my wife today. He wasn’t answering his phone but he knew it was you.” He's hoping maybe Spencer will tell him what that's about.
Spencer doesn’t disappoint. “Yeah, Zack told him he's not allowed to turn his phone off, so he just ignores us.”
“So what's he running away from?”
Spencer hesitates. “It's not my place to say, but it's good for him to be away from here for a while.”
Frank takes that explanation – he keeps his guys secrets too. “Okay, well, I just wanted you to know he was safe. I'll keep an eye on him while he's here.”
“Thanks. And could you maybe tell him to call my mom if he's not gonna be back by Sunday? She'll worry if he doesn't show up for dinner.”
Frank agrees, shaking his head over kids, and drives home.
